Arabic root
ج-ب-رHebrew root
ג-ב-רHebrew אלגברה is Arabic al-jabr, 'the restoring', from the title of al-Khwārizmī's ninth-century book. It came to Hebrew through Latin and European languages, with the Arabic article still attached. The root j-b-r, 'to set a bone, compel', is cognate with Hebrew ג-ב-ר, 'to be strong' (גיבור).
